What to Expect on Your First Visit?
You will be asked for a detailed case history by your practitioner. This will include information about your symptoms and medical background. You may feel some of this is irrelevant to your problem, but bear with us, the more we know the easier it is for us to help.
After the case history, which will normally take between 5 and 10 minutes, your practitioner may ask to see the problem area, which may involve removing items of clothing. The examination may involve orthopaedic testing, reflex testing & asking you to perform movements, to help buld up a picture of your problem. This will assist the practitioner to make an accurate working diagnosis and suggest an appropriate tratetment.
Undressing is not compulsory. From our point of view, being able to see the problem area is a great help e.g. if you have an elbow problem it is often useful to see the shoulder/neck too, as this is part of the 'functional chain'. If you feel uncomfortable about undressing please discuss this with your practitioner before hand. Modesty gowns and shorts are readily available.
As part of the examination your practitioner may also carry out a number of medical tests, such as (but not exclusively) reflexes, blood pressure, skin testing & strength testing.
After the examination we will discuss what we think is wrong, (diagnosis); a treatment plan and what you yourself can do to assist your recovery (self help).
Your practitioner may want to refer you for further investigations such as an x-ray or to another health care provider.
If at anytime during treatment you feel uncomfortable please do tell your practitioner at the time. We thrive on information!
